No.6 Kids Second Prize

Minna de tsunagu Torch Relay

Rika Nakamura(Japan)

About

This started with the idea from 6th grade kids saying “Let’s make a torch relay!” in the summer of 2018. With the word “Let’s connect feelings through programming”, 82 kids from nursery school in Miyazaki and elementary school in Tokyo collaborated using Scratch to create 47 prefectural torch relays by themselves. It is a fun work that is full of children’s ideas and energy lead to 2020.

Prize Comment

We all children, their parents and initiators are grateful to receive this honored award. Thank you so much. When we tried to create the better work than the last competition, the idea of torch relay came up from 12-years children. By co-creating a torch relay in programming, kids’ creators of 5-12 years old actually gain a sense of belonging and achievement. The idea and imagination of child is beyond adults’ capacity with a lot of surprises and inspirations. We are so happy to share this work with many people.

By characterizing each locality very well, this is like traveling around Japan. The whole place is correlative by repeating the same design of torch. The way how these mascots run is very unique and that makes me feel happy to just watch this. (Tomoyuki Sugiyama)
